05 Feb 10 Why Internet Marketing is hard for Baby Boomers

Here's a common scenario. I see some version of almost every day. A baby boom reaches the conclusion that the plan they have been in his life has not worked as well as expected. Perhaps the divorce. Perhaps a medical condition. Perhaps a lost job. The cause is not nearly as important as the situation.

At the same time, many baby boomers find their peak years behind them, we also find that their future is so bright. In many cases, it is downright frightening.

So what do they do? Starting an online business, of course. Sounds easy, but soon discover it is not. Here are three of the most common reasons for this.

1. Honesty factor – Most of us were raised when a handshake meant something. If you agree on something and shook hands on it, it did. No snivel outside it from all sides, and lawyers were not needed to solve it.

On the Internet, anonymity allows people to say something ( "I'm making thousands a week" "I'll be a great line up", "No need to hire," etc.) is not true and still escape with him.

Baby boomers still hold onto the hope that things work with a "handshake" on the Internet, but as a rule, do not. When you find someone who also has the honesty factor, the rod with them. Not even have to be in the same business. Gradually, you will be surrounded by people you trust, and things will get easier.

2. Of shame – Most boomers were raised when "Shame on you" meant something. It was actually one of the worst things you can say you or to you. Nobody wanted to shame them.

Unfortunately, most of the Internet seems to work in exaggerations of the truth. Most of the claims, the more people will cheat. Boomers expect things to be true, and are mostly surprised to learn when they are not.

It would be easier if there was an embarrassment factor, but there is not.

3. The Technology Factor – We were surprised when the Apollo spacecraft landed on the moon, and did so with a team that had 4k of memory. Now, I can have a computer at hand that has 2 million times that.

Maybe we have not seen a team not even close until we were in our thirties or forties. We had to have help on.

Meanwhile, people who knew more dominates the Internet by the time they were ten of what we never will. Not exactly a level playing field. We would do better if they met standards or Mumblypeg Rayuela, but we do not.

For boomers, it's not what we know, but exactly what we know. We can learn a lot, but we need to know what should be, and "gurus" is not going to say that.

If you're a boom, and you're struggling with making some money on the Internet, taking into account the three factors working against you and assess the opportunities and people offering packages can save you time, money and frustration.
