The ever evolving world of pay-per-click advertising offers incredible opportunities to internet marketers but the level of savvy is directly correlated to the degree of success these marketers achieve. Done poorly, pay-per-click advertising is an easy way to spend all your money without getting anything in return. Everyday, if possible, see which phrases are pulling your overall campaign down and eliminate them, leaving only the productive ones behind.

Google has a free keyword tool on their Adwords platform that will provide long lists of related searches for every word or phrase you enter. Take your most profitable phrases and enter them into the tool, allowing you to discover other potential winners.

This process will allow you to systematically lower your actual cost per click. That’s critically important because it’s that cost combined with your conversion ratio that must remain lower than the gross margin on the product you’re selling. In other words, if your product has a gross margin of $50 and your actual cost per click is 50¢, your conversion ratio better be better than 1 to 100. If not, you’ll be losing money.

Let’s consider an example. If your product has a gross margin of $50 and your actual cost per click is 50¢ and your conversion ratio is 1 to 60, it would cost you $30 for each sale. Since each sale leaves you with a $50 gross margin, you would make a $20 profit on each sale. On the other hand, if your actual cost per click was $1, each sale would cost your $60 and you would lose $10 on each unit sold.

There are three variables and each one needs to be managed carefully. A larger gross margin will benefit your bottom line, as will a better conversion ratio or a lower actual cost per click. Monitor each one closely and never stop calibrating your campaign. With a good product and some dedication, you’ll find a winning combination that will leave you with a consistent profit.

If you read what every blog declares and what every random Joe says that has a web page, the answer is “Yes”. The truth is, though, that a majority of the Survey/Offer websites are actually quite legit. Some might take months to pay you and some might not have a high approval rate, but out of the 40 or so “Pay Per Offer”, “Paid Survey”, or “trial offer” type site that I have signed up with over the past 2 years, I have been paid by 35 of them. Now, that is a far cry from the 99% mark that you have probably seen all over the internet.

The question you should be asking yourself, instead of “Which is a scam?”, is “Which ones are easy and will pay me the fastest?”.

100% of the Paid Survey sites that I have joined over the years are absolutely free to join. You should never have to pay a fee to access any of the surveys. Never. The sites that make you pay a fee to join just give you information that you could have gotten by yourself, for free. There are a few different types of survey sites out there, and I will explain each one very briefly.

The first type of Paid Survey site is the kind that actually sends you emails about new products, cars, shaving cream, cola, etc. They actually pay you money, usually $1 to $10, for you to give your opinion on different products. I must admit, some of these are very fun. A few of the companies will even send you the product in the mail and PAY you to try it out for a week. I have gotten to try many products, including Cheez-its, Gilette shaving gel, and a new kind of Colgate toothpaste. Each paid me about ten bucks simply for trying each one out.

The second tyope of Paid Survey site is really not a “Paid Survey” site at all. There is nothing wrong with that, though. They call themselves that just to drive traffic to their site, but once you get in, is is more of a “Ad Viewing” site. These sites pay you anywhere from $.50 to $3.00 for entering things such as your email address to different companies. It might not sound like much money, but it can add up very quickly as I have found out. These type of Survey sites also pay you to sign up for free trials, or other low cost trials. For example, you would click their affiliate link to Blockbuster which states, “Sign up for Blockbuster’s 30 day, $9.99 trial and we will pay you $16.00″. When you complete that offer, you just made yourself $6 in about a minutes time. You can cancel before the 30 day trial ends and you still get to keep the $16. This type of offer is where the real money is made concerning this type of Paid Survey site.

There are also Paid Survey websites that try to sell you a database of paid surveys. They try to lure you to purchase their “program” or whatever they call it with sales letters about how they make thousands monthly or even weekly. While I can not say that these letters are dishonest I can say that I have never heard of anybody who makes their full time income taking paid surveys outside of these types of websites. Again, you should NEVER have to pay when signing up to a Survey site. Also, you should know which sites are the best to join, because of things like quick payouts and an active forum.

It’s November 2006. So far the Web 2.0 bubble hasn’t burst. Here’s my attempt to put a pin-prick in it.

Don’t know what Web 2.0 is? It’s the notion that the next phase of web development is based on user-generated content. _You_ don’t have to write it, your visitors will.

- You get a CMS (a Content Management System, like PHPNuke).
- Users write reviews, blogs, forum posts (Webmasterworld.com).
- Search engines index this stuff (Google.com).
- Users tell their pals about it (MySpace.Com).
- You spend a few thousand bucks, or a few million, depending on how good your chief coder is.
- The thing sells itself (Digg.Com).
- You add contextual ads (Google Adsense).
- Fire off a couple of emails a day, and bank your cheques.

For the small-to-medium webmaster, this can be the route to disaster. Here’s my experience.

See, I was in favour of user contribution. Gives people something to _do_ on a site. If it’s any good, they’ll tell their pals. More traffic.

So I have chat rooms, a forum, a MySpace clone, a dating service, contact forms, ebooks, free software, the whole shebang. All humming away, all bringing in links, all keeping my visitors amused and informed.

Only problem is, the set-up time. The maintenance. The customisation. The search engine optimisation. The hacking attempts. The anti-hacking. The bug fixes. The security updates. The swearing filters. The troll kicking. The screeching. The spamming.

More bandwidth, more databases, more time, more money, more worry.

YouTube.com is a good example. Their business model is using pirated content. They have to police users. Bandwidth costs must be huge. Where’s the money going to come from: ads in pirated videos? Gimme a break.

For any web business, the basic questions are:

- What makes the money?
- What helps make the money?
- Where is the net profit coming from?

Could your site be better served by static HTML pages which you update once every six months? If your site is purely informational, it’s worth considering.

My epiphany came when first some Bahraini hackers clobbered a site of mine. I fixed it. Then some Turkish ones had a go. So I changed to a different CMS. So far, so good, until I realised I would have to constantly update this thing.

It then dawned on me that using a text-to-HTML converter (Text2html) and an index generator (dirhtml) meant simple text files could be turned into a basic site quickly.

You write it, format it, tart it up in Dreamweaver, index it, FTP it and voila!; a mini site without the upgrade headaches.

A CMS has some handy features, but pure HTML lets you sleep easier. Easier to move when the poop hits the air-conditioning, too.

Put it this way: which would you rather own when the Nazis are closing in? Damien Hirst’s ‘Shark In A Tank’ or the Mona Lisa?

I’m starting to think before I put stuff up now. Would simple HTML do just as well? Suppose I have to move web hosts? Will I be able to find one that’ll give me ten MySQL databases at the same price as my current host? And all the other features I need? (Answer: No, I’ve looked).

The first rule of computing is KISS; Keep It Simple, Stupid. With all the brouhaha about Web 2.0, I say, let’s hear it for Web 0.1!

As an Online Business Owner, I regularly subscribe to and read many ezine newsletters. Some of them I find rather silly, some hyped and some just plain annoying. As a internet business owner, however, it takes a lot to get me to unsubscribe because there is usually something to learn no matter how small from most newsletters.

My favorite newsletters of late are those that lead me on a trail to places where others who share my interest and are on the same path as I am. Whether it be a community of dieters, hair style fanatics , a mom friendly place or internet marketing communities.

These newsletters have their finger on the pulse of what Web 2.0 Marketing is and how to make the most of it.

Just recently, I got an email from one of my favorite affiliate programs which led me to his blog. Once I arrived to the blog, I found lively discussion initiated by the owner about his most recent opt in test results along with comments from other members. Unfortunately my two cents was not on topic but I felt my comments would still need to be seriously considered. Before I placed my comment, being the good netizen that I am, I prefaced my post by saying just that – “my comment may not be on topic.”

Unsure, if my comments would end up in a big black hole or deleted, I forged ahead with my comments that I felt would help his affiliate members.

Believe me, the suggestion I gave for his membership program was a Win- Win for everyone. I did not say this in my post but any smart business owner could for him or herself conclude that on their own.

Imagine my delight when I received his regularly scheduled newsletter one week later announcing changes to the basic membership program which included a change that actually used my suggestion. Mind you, the membership program I had was for his free program at the time. The suggestion had to do with making changes within the free basic membership program.

Needless to say, I was delighted to see someone take action. This owner not only has Web 2.0 marketing in his business but he is actually using it smartly. As a result of this, I have since upgraded to a paid membership.

Trust me when I say this owner will see his sales continue to increase because he has a few of the Web2.0 Marketing principles at work for him that I’ve noticed.

1. A Business System – He has a pretty good Web 2.0 Marketing system in place for both front end and back end sales for his business .

2. Integrated Blog – There is nothing like having a blog out there all by itself and no one to visit it. He has a good system in place to generate traffic to his blog.

3. Engaging – How many of your clients and prospects have you engaged in communication with lately? The biggest turn off to people online is when they are unable to interact with you. Don’t be afraid to put your thoughts out there and allow your subscribers or website visitors a chance to talk back.

Are you a control freak? Well if you are, it’s time to Move on and Let that go.

Stop talking to yourself and allow others to enter the conversation whenever you send out communications to your subscribers.
